I'm in high school, and my teachers used AR all throughout elementary and middle school. The experience in my school is extremely similar to the situation your son is having. I did really well with AR, having always been an avid reader, but my sister hates to read. Her reading grades were low because teachers would change the way they enforced AR. She would go one year never being told to read, and then the next year she would be forced to read at least 25 points per nine weeks. In the elementary schools around me, students are only required to take x number of tests. Some of the children I baby-sit aren't looking at AR as a way to read fun books. They see it as a competition. If you don't take as many tests as the student sitting beside you, you aren't as good as they are.

In my opinion, AR has many many kinks that need to be worked out, especially when being used for young kids.

Yikes. Way back when I was in school reading was much easier. Sounds like a mini nightmare.

Shut up! I used to work for Renaissance Learning in Madison, Wi which supported Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Math! It sounds like it's being misused in this instance, though. :(
